What to know
The main types of fades are low fades, mid fades, high fades, skin fades, taper fades, burst fades, drop fades, and temp fades. Each one changes where the blend starts, how much skin shows, and how bold the haircut looks from the side and back.
A low fade keeps the blend lower around the ear and neckline. It is a strong choice if you want a clean barber finish without making the whole side look too high or too dramatic.
A mid fade starts higher than a low fade and gives more contrast. Many clients choose a mid fade when they want the haircut to look sharp but still balanced for work, school, or everyday wear.
A high fade pushes the blend higher on the head. It creates the strongest contrast and works best when you want the sides very clean and the top to stand out more.
A skin fade, also called a bald fade, takes the shortest part down to skin before blending up. It looks the sharpest right after the appointment, but it usually needs more frequent maintenance because new growth shows quickly.
A taper fade is different because it focuses on the neckline, sideburns, and edges instead of fading the whole side. Tapers grow out softer and are a good option if you want a clean look without going too low on the sides.
A burst fade curves around the ear and is often used with mohawks, mullets, curls, or styles where the back shape matters. A drop fade drops lower in the back instead of staying straight around the head.
The best fade for you depends on your hair texture, head shape, beard, school or work rules, and how often you plan to come back. Bring a photo if you care about the exact height, shape, or blend.
